December 15th I was back to see my family doctor. He had the results of the November 26th blood work. My blood work showed elevated liver enzyme levels. At first, he believed that I had Hemochromatosis. However, when he re-examined my blood iron levels, they weren’t high enough to suggest that this was a good diagnosis. His thoughts then switched to Hepatitis. He joked around that the IV drug use I did in my spare time could have caused this. He was pleased to see me smiling and thought that perhaps the Prozac was helping and we were on the right track.
At this point, I was advised to stop taking birth control. He said maybe this could have been the cause of the high enzyme levels, but that would be too easy and in all honesty, chances are it had nothing to do with it. Either way, it was decided I’d stop taking it just so that it would not be present in my next set of blood work.
I once again told my doctor how I was still weak and couldn’t lift my arms up to do my hair and had a hard time washing it. I found myself propping my elbow up on the shelf in the shower in order to be able to wash my hair. I also told him how I was finding it increasingly difficult to go up the stairs and I was having trouble walking. He assured me this was normal with severe depression, and the Prozac would eventually start to help and I should see results in the next week or two.
At the end of the appointment, he told me I’d have to do more blood work and urinalysis that week as well as again in four or five weeks. My family doctor also advised me he would be referring me to a gastroenterologist, but that could take two months or more. Ultimately, that referral would be the best thing that happened…
